Go FIGure

This isn’t really a separate post more of a continuation of the ode to figs that I started on Saturday.

Sunday was no different, the figs were going strong and I decided to make a Goats Cheese, Red Onion and Fig Tart.

I served it with a simple salad and it was the most delicious and satisfying lunch I have had in ages.

The recipe is really easy and most of it can be prepared in advance, so I think this might become my recipe of choice when people are over for dinner.

My Fig and I

Today I have had a love affair with figs. I think figs might be the greatest reason for September. Bold I know, but it’s worth considering I assure you.

After managing to get my hands on a couple of pounds (we are talking weight not monetary value, although thanks to seasonality and good old market shopping they weren’t far off) of figs and decided to go a little crazy. I have big plans for some sort of savoury fig and cheese tart for tomorrows lunch, maybe followed by a fig and almond sweet desert but those dreams I am saving for tomorrow. Instead, today I decided a lovely jar of fig jam would be my goal, with an accompanying loaf of bread.

Leftovers Night

Recently I have been getting more and more fed up with those half used packets of different foods shoved at the back of my cupboard. I know the whole point of non perishable food is that it can become part of loads of meals. But I just seem to be collecting half empty packets of loads and loads of things, I mean I have 4 different kinds of rice packets all half used. How annoying!

After reaching my limit of shoving more and more in the cupboard I have decided to start using it. In my mind this is a great challenge. You spend less money as you are using up rather than buying more, you get to be a bit inventive and play around with flavours and ideas. Oh yes and you get more cupboard space.

Suppers with Grandpa

I know I have been completely silent, a dreadful thing for any blogger to do. Stop blogging. Well Did you miss me? Hopefully.

The reason for this silence – well quite simply I had a holiday. I know if you’re a ‘lifestyle’ blogger you are supposed to blog everyday regardless of holidays. I know I probably should have kept you updated on all the wonderful food I was eating and making, but to be quite honest I just wanted a bit of a break and I am sure you appreciated it as well. Comfort Food: Peanut Butter Jelly Style

Now I know I wrote a blog a few months ago about not comfort eating, but this week I have been feeling ill ( who gets colds in the summer! I mean come on!) and I wanted a treat. So… I decided it was ok to bend the rules, in addition these aren’t 100% From Scratch but as I say I am ill so…. it doesn’t count.

Also I always feel so much hungrier when I have a cold so snacks are essential.

Simple Suppers: Summertime Stew

How exciting is it that everything  in my title begins with an S, my alliteration is top notch. As is this fish stew. I know you might be thinking “ what the hell is she on about? stew in the summer?” Or “oh, its an English summer which means its cold and it rains.” Well think again my friends, because it is currently sitting at about 27 degrees C and it is a day for ice creams and shorts. (All the wishful thinking must have worked!) Anyway this is so light and scrumptious. Its exactly the sort of dinner you need at the end of a long hot day.

Food for thought- Fake Food Vs Real Food

(Don’t worry this isn’t about the plastic Fisher Price food, its about actual food – the stuff you can eat)

Recently I have been thinking a lot about what I have been eating, you might have realised from the attempt to not cook the most fatty desserts in the world that I am erring on the side of healthy food. Not to say that I always eat good food, I don’t, but when you eat From Scratch at least most of the food you eat is real food. I know this sounds a bit crazy, of course all food is real food, but when you think about it the stuff that sits in tins, or in processed packages with additives and preservatives by the time it reaches your mouth is it really food or is it just edible stuff? And does it really make a difference?

Summer Suppers Take 2

This week my search for simple summer suppers led me towards the joy of a Chicken Kebab. Whilst for many this may be synonymous with the late night/ early morning sobering up meal, for me the Chicken Kebab is summer on a plate – it’s like having a barbecue without having to have the weather or outside space for a barbecue. The crispy chicken, the rich and flavoursome sauces: a match made in tastebud heaven.

There are so many ways to serve a kebab and so many recipes to follow for sauces but I decided that as the brief was quick, delicious and simple that I would stick to the basics. Continue reading

Simple Suppers: Summertime Soup

Following on from my last post about wishful summer thinking, I have been focusing on simple but delicious dishes that can make the perfect light summer supper. ( All part of my plan to encourage some sunshine.)

Hopefully I will be testing a few out over the next few days and weeks all ready to share with you for when the sun does show its beautiful face.

My first attempt has been a spicy tomato and lentil soup. Regular readers will be aware chilli is a big hit in our house so I am always looking to find new ways to get some heat in more interesting flavour combos.

Wishful thinking…

All week I have been planing to do a post today on a delicious healthy sorbet and cooling ice lollies, writing about how they would be perfect for a sunny weekend.

So when I woke up this morning to hear the all too familiar sound of cars rushing through puddles outside and the pitter patter of tiny raindrops on the roof, my heart sunk a little.

When is summer going to arrive?! Let’s face it, everyone could do with the emotions summer brings. It seems when the sun shines we can all be that little bit happier, we take life a little bit slower, we are more sociable, we live more easily and we relax. Summer and all the images of it ( true or not) seems to be associated with fun times, easy living and the good life. So what do we do if the rain doesn’t stop?
