I think figs might be the greatest reason for September. Bold I know, but it&#8217;s worth considering I assure you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0287.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-843\" title=\"Figs\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0287.jpg\" width=\"490\" height=\"325\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">After managing to get my hands on a couple of pounds (we are talking weight not monetary value, although thanks to seasonality and good old market shopping they weren\u2019t far off) of figs and decided to go a little crazy. I have big plans for some sort of savoury fig and cheese tart for tomorrows lunch, maybe followed by a fig and almond sweet desert but those dreams I am saving for tomorrow. Instead, today I decided a lovely jar of fig jam would be my goal, with an accompanying loaf of bread.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"> <!--more--><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"> This was a very hot combo to try considering the balmy heat that London is currently giving off, the oven and boiling jam made a trip to the gym irrelevant as I was cooking in my home sauna! Surely though all the extra effort in the heat means that it will be all the more worth it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0345.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-844\" title=\"Bread and Fig Jam\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0345.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">I am yet to dig in as the jam is still cooling but I am confident from the smell it&#8217;s going to be a tea time treat that is worth the wait.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">In the meantime if you are in the mood why not attempt your own version for tea tomorrow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Here are the recipes<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Wholewheat Crown Loaf<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><em>Ingredients\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0312.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-845\" title=\"Wholewheat twisted crown loaf\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0312.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">1lb Strong White Flour<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">200g Wholewheat Flour<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">2tsp Salt<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">1 sachet fast action Dried Yeast<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">1 tbsp Honey<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">350ml luke warm Water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Olive Oil<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Poppy Seeds<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><em>Method<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Add all the flour, salt and yeast into a bowl. Make a well in the middle and add honey and then water and mix until full combined<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Place the dough on a floured surface and kneed for 5 mins, leave to rest for 5 and then knead for another 5mins until soft<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Leave for a further 5 mins and then roll out into a rectangle about 20cm x 40cm, brush on some olive oil and sprinkle poppy seeds over. Cut into 6 lengths with a pizza cutter and twist each one<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Twist all 6 strands together and join the ends so you have a crown shape<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Place on a baking tray and cover with cling film to rise for about 35 mins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Once risen place in a preheated oven (200c) for 35 mins until golden brown<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Leave to cool if you can<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Quick Fig Jam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><em>\u00a0Ingredients\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0335.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-846\" title=\"Figs ready to make Jam\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_0335.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">500g Figs ( about 6)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">150g Caster Sugar<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Zest of 1 Lemon<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">125ml Water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><em>Method<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">To prepare the figs remove the stalk and chop into quarters<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Place in a pan with the sugar and lemon zest, pour in the water and simmer until the sugar has dissolved (about 10mins)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Strain the mixture and push through a sieve until almost everything except the skins and really pulpy bits are through (I did this is two stages as my bowl was on the small side \u2013 it works both ways so do whatever you need to)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Then work the jam up to a rolling boil for about 10 \u2013 15mins until thick<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Pour into a sterilised jar and leave to cool<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">This is great on toast or bread, as an accompaniment to some cheese or why not add it to a cake or some biscuits, whatever your fig filled heart desires.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_03121.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-847\" title=\"Bread and Fig Jam\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/09\/dsc_03121.jpg\" width=\"490\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Yum!
