{"id":302,"date":"2011-10-10T12:01:29","date_gmt":"2011-10-10T12:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.wordpress.com\/?p=302"},"modified":"2013-04-21T20:52:27","modified_gmt":"2013-04-21T20:52:27","slug":"musings-on-muesli","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.suppersfromscratch.com\/?p=302","title":{"rendered":"Musings on Muesli"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Muesli is the oxymoron of the patient\/quickie food analogy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">I compiled it in about 30 seconds, but to prepare the ingredients took over five hours (and if I had chosen different fruit, my research tells me could have been hitting the eight hour mark).<!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">From Scratch muesli sounds pretty easy then.\u00a0 And it is &#8211; you get a mixture of grains, in this case oats, and mix it with any nut you want and traditionally some raisins.\u00a0 Hey presto, a bowl of muesli fit to beat even those pesky Dorset people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">What a boring blog it makes though! Compile 5 ingredients and eat \u2013 the height of my culinary prowess.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">All I can say is thank God for the raisin otherwise this blog would be retired to the back catalogue of things that should be read but aren\u2019t. You would find it nestling amongst other greats of the philosophical world such as Beyond Good and Evil, Socratic Dialogues, and The Hungry Caterpillar (nobody reads the words; they just admire the pictures!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0220.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-310\" title=\"The grapes of wrath\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0220.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Anyway let&#8217;s focus on the life saving raisin that is dragging us back from the brink of mundane to the precipices of culinary adventure where I firmly intend to stay from now on!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">So in short I lied, this isn\u2019t about muesli- muesli is the destination\u2013 but dried fruit provides the unforgettable journey towards our destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">For\u00a0 once I decided to prepare properly and took the time to research. However this wasn\u2019t particularly reassuring. I found some fearful descriptions that mentioned Dehydrating machines, asorbic acid and of course drying your fruit in the sun. None of these sounded like good options for me.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">I wasn\u2019t going to fork out on a dehydration machine<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Dipping my fruit in ascorbic acid did not appeal, and seemed to oppose the From Scratch philosophy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Let&#8217;s be realistic: despite our relatively warm October, an English autumn does not provide sufficient heat to Sun dry fruit!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">However salvation came on a cloud of oven drying. Unfortunately even this wasn\u2019t straight forward as there were a mixture of temperatures and methods given to me so I amalgamated and hoped for the best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">I thought I&#8217;d focus first on raisins, as these are essential in a good muesli, so bought a pack of red grapes and began my experimentation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>What you need\u2026<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">A pack of grapes \u2013 the smaller the size of each grape the better\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0217.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-308\" title=\"Grapes\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0217.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">A steamer\/pan and colander<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">A sheet of greaseproof paper<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">An oven<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><strong>Method<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Preheat your oven to about 140C<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Wash and dry your grapes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Cut bigger grapes in half so they do not take too much longer to dry<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Heat up some water in you steamer and steam the grapes for about 5mins<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Then plunge them into ice cold water<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Dry them off again and place on a sheet of greaseproof paper directly on your oven shelf<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Place in the oven for about 4 hours, you need to leave the door slightly open to let steam escape (I did this by wedging the door with a tea towel so it was slightly ajar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">When they are done they should be dry but still pliable<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">If you aren\u2019t going to eat your raisins anytime soon, pasturize them by giving them another blitz in the oven at 150C for 10 mins<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">There you have it &#8211; dried fruit!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0224.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-309\" title=\"Raisins\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/suppersfromscratch.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/img_0224.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">It&#8217;s quite satisfying to see them all come out, I found the grapes that were whole turned out better than the ones cut in half which is why I suggest trying to find smaller grapes. \u00a0\ud83d\ude42<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">It was one of the small pleasures in life knowing that heating a grape at a low temperature will turn into a raisin.\u00a0 That sounds stupid I know, but give it a try and I guarantee you will feel the same satisfaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;\">Five hours cook time, 30 seconds prep time, but an unbelievably rewarding first mouthful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;
